Located in the southern portion of Mexico’s central region in a zone with a warm tropical climate. Morelos has valley regions, lakes that supply the state with water, and mountain chains covered with forests.
In this fertile territory you can discover the beauty of protected areas like Lagunas de Zempoala National Park, which has seven lagoons that are fed by underground rivers in which you can go diving. Here you can also do ecotourism outings and mountain bike riding in the coniferous forests. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, you can do a rafting trip on the Amacuzac River, especially during the rainy season when the rapids are more challenging.
To get away from it all for a relaxing vacation, Cuernavaca, the state capital, offers excellent hotels, rivers and swimming holes near the Ex-Hacienda de Temixco and the Ex-Hacienda de Las Estacas. Also in Cuernavaca, known as the City of Eternal Spring, you can go golfing or hit the spa resorts for a massage and other therapeutic treatments. The city also has various bars where you can enjoy a bohemian atmosphere. If you’d like to learn more about the state’s history and culture, visit the Xochicalco archaeological site, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, and the ruins of Tepozteco, in Tepoztlan. There you can go to a spa and then visit the markets, where they sell esoteric souvenirs and various crafts.
Cuernavaca
Cuernavaca, the City of Eternal Spring, is located 89 km (55 mi) south of Mexico City, in the northern region of the state of Morelos. The city has a pleasant climate, with an average year-round temperature of 23º C (73º F).
This destination is an excellent place to relax, as each year it draws many tourists looking to escape from the stress of their workday routines. Some travel to Cuernavaca to visit its luxurious spas, which offer all kinds of massages and relaxation therapies. Others enjoy going to the swimming resorts, which have excellent facilities. Or you can simply take a stroll through the city and marvel at the magnificent historic buildings, such as the Convento del la Asuncion (Convent of The Assumption), la Capilla de San Jose (San Jose Chapel) and the Palacio de Cortes (Palace of Cortez), the oldest viceregal civic construction, which houses Diego Rivera murals. Also of interest is the Jardin Borda (Borda Garden), an important city symbol due to its rich history and natural beauty.
In the surrounding areas you’ll find wonderful attractions like the Corredor Biologico Ajusco-Chichinautzin, an ideal spot for ecotourism outings; swimming resort Las Estacas, where you’ll find crystalline springs surrounded by some of the state’s most beautiful natural scenery; the Zempoala Lagoons, which consists of lagoons, archaeological ruins and forests; and the Xochicalco archaeological zone, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
Tepoztlan
Tepoztlan, a magical town full of mysticism and tradition, is located 21 km (13 mi) east of Cuernavaca, the state capital of Morelos, and 71 km (44 mi) south of Mexico City. It lies along the foothills of the Sierra del Chichinautzin, in a region with an average year-round temperature of 18º C (64º F) and a climate with low humidity.
In this town of rich natural resources you’ll immediately notice the imposing Cerro del Tepozteco (Tepozteco Hill), a main tourist attraction where you’ll find a pre-Hispanic construction on the top of the hill. It is said that this site has a positive energy force, which is why it draws hundreds of visitors during the spring equinox.
